Tottenham Escapes Coventry In The Final Moments Of The League Cup

Tottenham escapes Coventry in the final moments of the League Cup

A last-minute goal from substitute Romaine Sawyers earns Tottenham a 3-2 win over Coventry in the League Cup third round.

Tottenham Hotspur avoided an embarrassing upset in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, coming from behind to beat third-tier Coventry City 3-2 thanks to a last-gasp winner from substitute Romaine Sawyers.

Steven Bergwijn put Spurs ahead in the first half, but Coventry hit back with two goals in quick succession from Callum O'Hare and Jodi Jones. Harry Kane equalised for Tottenham just before the hour mark, and Sawyers popped up with the winner in the 90th minute.

The win was a relief for Tottenham manager Antonio Conte, who had made several changes to his team from the weekend's Premier League win over Fulham. Conte will be hoping that his team can build on this victory when they return to Premier League action on Saturday against Manchester United.

For Coventry, it was a cruel end to a spirited performance. The League One side had taken the lead twice, but they were unable to hold on against a Tottenham team that eventually showed their quality.

The match was played in front of a crowd of 30,000 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Coventry had the better of the early chances, with O'Hare and Jones both going close. However, it was Tottenham who took the lead in the 29th minute when Bergwijn finished off a flowing move.

Coventry equalised just five minutes later through O'Hare, who fired home from close range. Jones then put Coventry ahead in the 34th minute, taking advantage of a mistake from Tottenham goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.

Tottenham levelled the scores again just before the hour mark when Kane headed home from a Son Heung-min cross. And in the 90th minute, Sawyers popped up with the winner, firing home from the edge of the box.
